Baby monitors are incredibly useful inventions of the century. Every caring parent has at least one baby monitor at home, because they want to make sure that their child is safe 24/7.

Having a business is fairly similar to having children. Owners usually want to make sure that their business is running according to the plan, developing at a decent pace and so on.

Having a website for your business is essential nowadays. And the truth is, even if you have a website, there’s no guarantee that your business will be profitable and successful. Of course there are some older tools to help you and your website, but nowadays that’s not always enough.

What if I told you that there is a baby monitor for your company’s website too?

Ben owns a local shop, he sells pet clothes. He launched a webshop recently, and Ben was optimistic about it, but unfortunately the number of orders didn’t match his expectations.

He went to the pub with his friends the other day, and his friend, Josh told him about how a website optimizing service called Capturly, has changed his life.

Ben wants his business to be successful too, so he went straight home to order this service. (Just kidding, they drank like a dozen beers before lurching home.)

But two days later, he finally ordered the service, added the given code to his site and it was up and running.

Two weeks later, his sales went up by an impressing 180%. (Actually, he completely ran out of dog coats.)

So you would ask what did really happen during those two weeks? What kind of sorcery is this?

He optimized his webshop so his customers could use it more efficiently. And it did work like magic.

So what if I told you that there is a tool with which you can track all of your visitors’ behavior? (You know, just like a baby monitor.)

This feature basically records your visitors’ screen so that you can play the whole process back. There are some tools which can tell you where did they leave your page (like conversion funnels), but do you really know WHY did they leave it?

With the visitor recording feature it’s easy as 1,2,3.

Recording made Ben realize that there were three major points to be fixed.

Problem #1: bad search

After watching a couple of recordings he realized that he had lost his potential customers at start. Because it is a webshop, people usually (but not always) already know what they need, so they start by typing the name of the given product into the search field.

But what if they cannot find the product they were looking for? They might try two more times and then leave the page without buying anything.

Solution: improving the website’s search engine

Ben realized that implementing prediction into the search engine can help people to avoid typos and to choose from the products more precisely (without having to open multiple tabs).

Problem #2: not changing the color of visited links

Because his website is a webshop, Ben has various subpages with many different items. People usually spend a couple of minutes browsing, clicking on different products.

When watching the recordings, he realized that he had made a big mistake. There was this girl (let’s just call her Angie), who wanted to buy a fancy bed for her dog. She was very cautious to observe every single item, but she had an annoying problem.

She clicked on a product, got lost in the details, and when she went back to the search results, she didn’t know which were the items she had already seen. Because of this, she often opened the same items a couple of times, and probably got annoyed.

Solution: changing the color of visited links

It’s a minor improvement, but it can have a huge effect on user experience.

Problem #3: not opening links in new tabs

The last problem Ben encountered with was in connection with tabs.

Many people hate going back to the previous page, right clicking or clicking with holding the control button down just to open a link in a new window.

It can be pretty disillusioning. Have you ever wanted to check multiple products of a webshop at the same time, but opening links in new tab wasn’t default?

Solution: opening links in new tabs

Much better Ben, much much better. It wasn’t so hard, was it?

Conclusion

From this little article you can see that having proper resources doesn’t mean that your business will be viable. You have to use your resources appropriately.

The good news is that you can change this. For those of you who have websites for their businesses, you can have that baby monitor inserted into your site in 5 minutes, and let the analyzation begin.

I told you, it’s easy as 1,2,3. It’s worth a try.
